Hairstyle Tutorial: Slip-knot bun.
I just posted this to
longhair here, but I believe in crossposting back to my primary journal, therefore:
I've been wearing this hairstyle for the last few days, and I decided to make a tutorial for itI call it a slip-knot bun, since that's the basis for its shape. It's as comfortable and secure as a usual "cinnamon roll" style bun, but sits vertically on the head and has a more detailed, woven or twisted look to it. Because it requires that you make a slip knot with your ponytail, it might not work for midlength hair. Mine is below my hips; I imagine waist length is long enough, but you'd have to try and find out! The style is secured by a single hairstick. The pictures are no pieces of art, but I hope they're clear. The style also looks neater and nicer if you don't do it while taking photos each step! If you have questions, let me know. This is my first tutorial, so I hope it's helpful, and I'd love to see pictures if anyone else uses this style.
The finished hairstyle:

Illustrated tutorial:

Pull hair into a ponytail. Hold base with non-dominant hand. Hold tail with dominant hand. Throughout all steps, only twirl tail into loose rope when necessary to keep strands aligned.

Pull tail up, over, and behind two fingers (index and middle works best for me) of the non-domiant hand. Continue to secure base of ponytail with non-dominant thumb.

Loop tail under the back of non-dominant hand and pull overhead. Separate the two fingers in the loop of hair. Continue to secure base of hairstyle with non-dominant thumb.

Capture tail with the two fingers of the non-dominant hand which are threaded through the loop of hair. You're in the position to make a knot with your hair. Holding hair loop with dominant hand, begin to pull tail through with non-dominant hand.

Continue to pull tail through hair loop. You've now made a slip knot (slip in non-dominant hand, knot in dominant hand). Release knot from non-dominant hand.

Locate two loops in hairstyle: The slip knot is a loop, still held in non-dominant hand. At the bottom of the knot is another loop, shown held by dominant hand. This is where you will secure the hair. First, wrap remaining tail around the knot and tuck in ends. Make sure the wrapped tail is underneath the loops indicated.

Push hairstick in the top loop, against the back of the head, and out of the bottom loop to secure hairstyle. If style is too loose, remove hairstick, unwrap tail, and pull tail to slip out the slip knot. Try again. Adjust knot tightness by making the first loop closer to the scalp or the slip knot loop longer or shorter.
Finished style, from more angles:

From the front, of course, it looks like a normal bun.
