Review: With the aid of V.F.D. members, the Baudelaires go in search of the missing sugar bowl. This is an in-between book. Character development and moral complexity have become ongoing trends, and they continue here. Unlike most of the recent books in this series, this one has a strong atmosphere—the debris-littered, mushroom-infested grotto is a particular delight. But the plot is in a holding pattern, and little of significance happens despite the phenomenal, character-driven last few pages. Perhaps it's the lull before the series's-end storm; it's still a disappointment.
