The old 70s-80s TOS novels often acknowledged in passing the traumatic consequences to the things that happened in episodes. It was one thing I appreciated about them.

I think some of the novels for later series may have also explored these subtexts, but there was an era when it was pure fanfic. (Er, meaning the earlier era - and that mostly being a good thing.)
