They really do! I like the series a lot - it's stranger and more literally alien than most of the Alliance-Union books, which is a lot of fun to read, and also makes its own self-contained series a little removed from the broader Alliance-Union setting, which is nice and approachable. They're just so fun, really, while also being very Cherryh.
If you picked up the book for the hani, I also like how the worldbuilding for them develops as the series progresses and various internal conflicts make them feel a little more real and diverse as a species. It's never as realistic as I'd like, but it's interesting, and the pseudo-inverted gender roles play a big part of Chanur's Legacy in particular.
