juushika: Screen capture of the Farplane from Final Fantasy X: a surreal landscape of waterfalls and flowers. (Anime/Game)
Just as a quick note, I finally (procrastination, much? a lot of internet stuff is being studiously ignored, including emails, but I promise to get to them soon) revealed the answers to my movie quotes meme. 13 of the 15 were guessed, which of course confirms my suspicion that most of you share (at least parts of) my exceptional taste in films.

Or somesuch.

Two films, however, were never guessed. These are:

6. Hedwig and the Angy Inch
Hedwig is a transexual punk rock singer, turned from young Hansel of East Berlin into Hedwig of America through a botched sex change operation. With her band The Angry Inch, she performs at dinners and festivals as she follows the tour of Tommy Gnosis, a rock sensation who was once a young boy who loved her—and then left, taking with him her songs. This Broadway musical-cum-movie musical is an impossibly difficult film to sum up (no kidding, right?) because of its bizarre characters, plot, and themes: sexuality, transexuality, gender, identity, rock and roll, love. Ultimately, it is a film not about finding gender or finding love, but about finding oneself. It is over the top, hilarious, and irreverent at the same time that it is incredibly moving—every time I watch it, this movie makes me cry. (The quote I used for this film exhibits both the humor and the emotional impact, and is one of my favorites.) If you didn't recognize the quote and don't know the film, then I highly recommend you go out and discover it.

14. This is Spinal Tap
I sincerely hope that if I had quoted "These go to eleven" that you guys might have been able to identify this film. The original mockumentary, This is Spinal Tap follows the British rock band Spinal Tap through a USA tour that comes late in their career—and follows the fumbling and foibles of the aging rock band as they get lost back stage, suffer technical difficulties, produce an album without a cover (the cover is black, ergo the quote "It's like, how much more black could this be? and the answer is none. None more black.") and lose a band member (ergo the quote, "Well, I'm sure I'd feel much worse if I weren't under such heavy sedation."). It has a very specific sense of humor, sometimes dry, sometimes over the top, always the product of wide-eyed innocent stupidity. There are all number of scenes that makes this one of the best films ever made—of all of them, Stonehenge is my favorite. This is a must see film, so if by some fluke you haven't seen it—you must see it. Now. (It will also make the loading screens of Guitar Hero make a lot more sense.)

I couldn't let those wonderful films pass forgotten. All of the films I quoted are personal favorites of mine, and I tagged each with a sentence or two about why—I recommend them all, and do much congratulate those that guessed the film.
