When posting your book log:
Make sure that "Disable Auto-Formatting" is checked. On LJ's own update page, that means posting in HTML format; the check box is near the top right of the update field. If you have problems finding it, let me know; I can take a screen shot for you.

Here's your current book log code, all cleaned up:

<td align="center"><font size="1.5">Fantasy / suspense</font></td>
<td align="center"><font size="1.5">498</font></td>
</tr>
</table></center>

To insert a new row, use this code:
<tr>
<td align="center"><font size="1.5">DATE</font></td>
<td align="center"><font size="1.5">TITLE</font></td>
<td align="center"><font size="1.5">AUTHOR</font></td>
<td align="center"><font size="1.5">GENRE</font></td>
<td align="center"><font size="1.5">PAGE</font></td>
</tr>

Insert it after the last </tr> and before the </table></center>. Be sure to insert the entire code, from <tr> to </tr>. Make sure to put the relevant information in between the <font> and </font> codes.

To prevent this from happening in the future:
You have to do a couple of things.
  1. Make sure that you always check "Disable Auto-Formatting." Even with the code correctly formatted, leaving that box unchecked will render the line breaks in the written code (which make it more readable) as line breaks ahead of the rendered table.

  2. Always copy-paste a clean version of the code. If an error sneaks in, it'll stick around if you just copy paste it directly into a new post.

  3. Be careful inserting new data in order to prevent the code from becoming corrupted. That means that making sure each open tag is closed. The way that the code is formatted now, it should be very easy to see when you leave a tag dangling, but without knowledge of HTML and tables those errors may be hard to see. A friendly code geek, or else a quick internet search or three, may give you the basic table information you need to make sure that you can prevent problems from cropping up again.

  4. If a problem crops up, correct it immediately—because it will persist if you continue to copy paste the corrupted code, and if you're copying or posting the code incorrectly the problem may indeed get worse.
