It really did pay off! I did as is my habit and read both preface and introduction after the text, and found it a really good chaser, partially Jeanette Winterson's preface, for reassuring me that yes, the text is as weird/dense as it felt while reading!, but also for contextualizing it, culturally, but also Winterson's shared admiration (and deeper knowledge). It's one of the books that for me needed a chaser. It's so short, but such a lot, and left me pleasantly reeling.
