TY for the link! I have approximately no familiarity with Star Wars, so I wouldn't likely recognize it as a once-upon-a-time source, but that absolutely explains why the worldbuilding is so sketchy at the beginning ... and why if it walks like slashfic and quacks like slashfic then it may, indeed, be slashfic. I've since picked up an omnibus that contains the next two books and am working through that, & I look forward to ongoing idfic. That style used to be a guilty pleasure for me, but is now a straight-up pleasure.
