I'd be fascinated to know how you see it then vs. now, nonetheleast because I'm pretty sure you're referring to the inset narrative the protagonist writes about a boy that kills a bear to save his sister, which is either a small mistaken detail from 20 years ago or one of those "I built myself a whole brainscape built on child-me's favorite parts, which may not entirely reflect the original text" moments.
