I'm reading fanfic again.

I'm writing fanfic again. (Just this one! ...Or maybe two. But they're oneshots! Then I'll stop, I swear!)

I'm editing (to fix the very worst) and reposting The Bonded on fanfiction.net. You know, The Bonded? The 40k word DBZ monstrosity that I wrote, um, six years ago.

I blame Kingdom Hearts.

The Kingdom Hearts fic (Riku/Roxas) is going to be good. The narrator is a limited third person, as I've had it up to here with crappy POV accounts, and I desire something akin to a long cutscene of angsty hot goodness. Ahem. The setting is precise, the characterization and various driving forces are at least interesting enough that they've been plaguing my thoughts for a few days now, and the prose is tight and intentional. I'm about halfway through with it. For all that it is an ... unrecorded moment (and a sequel to Another Side, Another Story) that fits neatly into the KHII plot, and so doesn't have an overarching story of its own, it still has plot enough and it certainly has character and action. I'm pleased with it this far. Now I've just got to cross my fingers that I complete it.

Now The Bonded on the other hand ... is six years old. I wrote it when I was sixteen, a fannish little virgin with a lot of extra time, spinning out a long and angsty tale about the bond that unites two saiya-jin in a lifelong relationship. Oh, the fic has it's good moments, and the sex was pretty inspired considering I'd never had any at the time of writing, but, honest to God, I used phrases like:

Goten: "...The problem is that Dad was raised as an earthling, so he thinks it's wrong to be gay."

And I used them without shame. I also called Vegeta "the saiya-no-ouji" and "the Prince" which of course mean the same thing, I used Japanese cuss words instead of English ones, and I once called Trunks "the purple-haired man." To say nothing of the adverbs.

All of these references have now been omitted from the document as it exists on FF.N.

I'm reposting the fic because it was pretty damn popular "in its day" (as they say) and because it does have its good points (the prologue! the bonding scene between Vegeta and Goku!) (I just spoiled my own fic for you!). But as I'm working through the edit and uploading the fic, I keep wanting to bang my forehead against the desk. I just remind myself: I was sixteen. This was years ago. It's allowed to have its horrendiously awful moments.

It is without doubt the best KH fanfic I've run across since delving back into this fandom. The characters are spot on, the voice is clever, the plot and character interaction is delicate and brilliant, and the sex is ridiculously amazing—tactile, intentional, and perfect for the story and the characters. I can't recommend this too highly. Read it!
