Because my birthday falls so close to the massive Halloween update, I actually have the money to order decants this time! My favorite decanter is
bookandbroom, almost entirely because she saved me when I forgot Ivanushka was a super-limited edition (she had a few decants left and I quickly grabbed two, and then Ivanushka turned out to be one of my all time favorite scents). So of course I ordered my decants from her.
When the Halloweenies first went up last night, I was less than excited. There just didn't seem to be much to appeal to me. However, having slept and come back to it, things are looking up. Despite finding BPAL in autumn, I've never had a strictly-autumnal BPAL blend, so I'm checking out a few of those; there's also a Sleepy Hollow group of scents, which is exciting in its own right. I'm actually quite happy with the scents that I decided on. But there's enough BPAL blather just in my thoughts on the names and notes of my order:
Decants:
GRAVEYARD DIRT 2008
This is the scent of pure graveyard dust, spattered with grave loam and dusted lightly with tombstone moss.
Older incarnations are pretty famous as the king of dirt scents, which I've had good luck with in the past. That, and I'm curious.
SAMHAIN 2008
Truly the scent of autumn itself -- damp woods, fir needle, and black patchouli with the gentlest touches of warm pumpkin, clove, nutmeg, allspice, sweet red apple and mullein.
This doesn't strongly stand out to me, but it seems like a well-rounded, distinctly autumnal blend, and previous year incarnations are very popular.
TO AUTUMN
Mist and mellow fruitfulness: mist-swirled, moss-covered bark and dry red leaves, apple pulp and knotty galangal, with poppy juice and nutmeat.
It was the nutmeat that convinced me, but this sounds like an alternate autumn, misty and and fruity and just very lovely.
ICHABOD CRANE
Dusty black wool, tea with cream, black pepper, muguet, and beeswax candle drippings.
Lately I've been wearing mostly traditional nice perfume smells, but this onebetween the wool and the candle drippingis non-traditional and so intriuging that I just have to try it.
KATRINA VAN TASSEL
White rose and honeyed cream.
This will probably be the runaway hit of this update. It sounds lovely, I like honey and cream, and (having tried it once) white rose may be a rose I can actually wearso this is a good scent to try.
ETA: GUNPOWDER
Carrot peelings, hay, chaff, molasses, maple oats, red apples, stable wood, and musk.
I added this to my decant order last second after rewatching the Tim Burton film and reminding myself that Gunpowder is, of course, the horse. The notes sound strangely wonderful, and I'm curious what carrot is like in BPAL.
Bottles:
FEARFUL PLEASURE
Dried orange peels floating in simmering cider, roasted apples, smoldering firewood, chimney smoke, sassafras beer, warm hawthorn wood, and oakmoss.
I debated a long time between buying a decant or a bottle. The decant is a shoo-in, of course, but something about the notes just grabs me: everything appeals, and the touch of orange citrus in the apple sounds wonderful. So I took the risk on the bottle, and I hope it's good.
MOROCCO (GC)
Arabian spices wind through a blend of warm musk, carnation, red sandalwood and cassia.
I asked her to pin on this GC order because I was planning to buy a GC bottle for my birthday, so I might as well save on shipping this way. Morocco is one of the scents that I wear most, and the musk/carnation/honey (not a listed note, but it's there) is a wonderful skin-scent combination which is very "me."
Extras: (both thrown in for free, yay)
Decant of THIRTEEN 7/07
A base of cocoa absolute and white chocolate with thirteen baneful and beneficial bits including vanilla bean, white ginger, orchid, golden peach, massoia bark, clove, honey, and starfruit.
I have and love Thirteen 4/07, and have been curious to try other Thirteens as a result. This one is fruity-spicey-cocoa, a bit different from what I'd usually go for, but intriguing.
Empty bottle of PUMPKIN V
Pumpkin with cranberry, strawberry, red musk, red rose, rosehip, frankincense, fig, jasmine, and carnation.
Back when I first found BPAL, they had a pumpkin blend with cocoa. I wanted it but didn't get it, and since then there's never been anything similar. There's no chocolate here, of course, but I love red notesbut I can't wear red rose. I welcome the chance to sniff this for free.
Now, of course, I'm unduly excited for them to arrive, even though it'll be a month or so. It's not everything I wanted, certainly, but at just over $50 total it's more than I expected I'd be able to buy. (Thank you, Devon. ^_^) And there's always winter holidays to track down things like that bottle of Ivanushka, or Silvered Carnations, or Luxe Chocolate Amber, or Wulric the Wolfman. And I can dream always of rich chocolate Pumpkin Patch II '06. Mmmm....
