(Finally remembering to post these about the time that I start reviewing my Lupers, oops. I imagine the Lupers will be my last order for a while? Until at least autumn next year, but I'm unsure if I'll do another cycleI may have new purchases out of my system for a while & will be spending money on apartment things? Honestly didn't even plan to do Lupers, but I added a few blind bottles to my Yule order. Anyway!)
GINGERBREAD OUDH (LE, Yule 2018: Gingerbread Cotillion)
In vial: Lemony, not-quite-foodie gingerbread, not very sweet.
On me: Warm, slightly sweetened, lightly spiced, citrusy gingerbread, definitely the most lemony of the 2018 gingerbreads I tried. The oudh is distinct but difficult to pin down, a grounding resinous wood which develops as the scent wears: a sweet resin with a touch of wood and a breath of pine. It works well alongside the warm, smooth golden-brown of the gingerbread. It feels like a variant on the traditional Christmas spices + pine: spices which are more golden and less foodie; a pine which is more resinous and unique. But I concur that other reviews that the combo can go savoryI got more of it fresh out of the mail (so maybe aging will further tame it), but sometimes there's an impression of Indian restaurant-esque savory spices. Throw is low.
Verdict: Interesting! As noted, I imagine aging will benefit this; I like the non-traditional traditional combo. But it didn't really grab me.
GINGERBREAD, CACAO, AND CHAMPACA (LE, Yule 2018: Gingerbread Cotillion)
In vial: Dark, spicy, powdery gingerbread.
On me: Powdery, dry, sweet, spicy gingerbread + cocoa; it has a distinct "baking mix" vibe that reminds me a lot of the cocoa powder vibe I get from El Dia de los Reyes (hot cocoa with cinnamon, coffee, and brown sugar), plus the cocoa is a close dupe for that blend. Champaca come out in drydown but still takes second stage, a sweeter/more bodied/almost-woody base that grounds the powderiness a little.
Verdict: Like, not love. This goes too sweet (while still skirting foodieit's pre-food, gingerbread dry ingredients) and too powdery.
GINGERBREAD, COFFEE BEAN AND SMOKED VANILLA (LE, Yule 2018: Gingerbread Cotillion)
In vial: Sweet, creamy, spiced coffee that I could almost read as cocoa.
On me: Warm, lightly spiced baked gingerbread against a creamy, smooth, sweet coffee. Maybe it's the vanilla which contributes that creaminess? I get nothing smoked, and the coffee definitely leans towards smooth milky Miskatonic University coffee rather than the drier roasted beans I get from blends like The Ta-Ta. I also don't get any citrus from the gingerbread, although I did fresh out of the mailso it's probably doing subtle work in the background.
Verdict: Lightly sweet, gently spiced, cozy, surprisingly smooth (and smoother than the other Gingerbread Cotillion blends I've tried this year, which have a powdery, spicy vibe); foodie but not cloying. I like it but don't love it.

Date: 2024-07-09 07:18 am (UTC)I do avoid most floral with the exception of lotus blossom, orange blossom, apple blossom, and primarily carnation. Carnation is probably the scent I wear most often, actually!
My lotus blossom favorite is a limited edition, Glowing Vulva at Ryogoku Bridge. It looks like they brought it back this year!
Orange blossom I don't have any particular recommendations; I tend to play pretty loose with citrus scents (blossom versus peel versus etc) and wear them sparingly.
My favorite for apple blossom is Brisingamen, which is primarily amber for me with apple blossom and carnation to round it out.
My favorite carnation in the general catalog, in order:
Morocco (slightly sweet, spicy, dry, I like this one in warm weather)
Masquerade (salty, spicy, dark, robust)
Inez (Morocco's heavier cousin, sweet, resinous, spicy)
Prurience (this might not be in the catalog anymore? smokey, red, musky, spicy)
I'd love to know how your testing journey is going! These days I just wear from my existing collection, but I still do! Carnation, cocoa, vetiver, and blood musk are my go-tos.

Date: 2024-07-09 11:12 pm (UTC)What I ended up doing was getting the "Best Beloved" imp set (which includes Morocco!) in the hopes that it would give me a reasonable range to experience, and then buying a few individual ones that intrigued me - Athens, Maenad, Twilight, and Katharina (...which I didn't *not* get because my Dracula fic character). Part of my goal here is to broaden my perfume tastes a little, since I historically have worn extremely simple, classic floral scents.
I've only tried a few actually on me so far. I tried Blood Kiss on a weekend day when I didn't have to go out much to be safe, since it's one of the farthest out of my comfort zone, and I'm still not sure what I think of it. The cherry comes off very strong on me, and with the clove it sorts reminds me of a 90's new age shop, but that's not necessarily a bad thing! I think I'll try it only for very specific occasions, though.
Then I tried Twilight, with the expectation that it would be squarely in my comfort zone, and indeed I liked it a lot - very nice jasmine with some complexity. Today I tried Maenad, which I enjoyed (orange blossom but with a more acidic fruitiness) but am still feeling out. I admire your range of perfume description vocabulary, which I would like to build myself, since this is all very new to me!
I haven't worn much carnation before, but now I'm excited to see how I like Morocco! The Brisingamen also sounds intriguing to me.

Date: 2024-07-10 07:09 am (UTC)Blood Kiss is INTENSE. I like it okay, but wear only the smallest amounts and only in cold weather, or it gets kind of cloying. I feel like '90s New Age shop is a reoccurring thing in the brand, and I'm not super mad about it personally; their clove and patchouli can definitely tend that way.
May you enjoy carnation! I feel like it's a pretty atypical floral, which is probably why I will wear that and not other florals, and why I feel like the least qualified person for recommending floral scents. But I've loved it forever, and I feel like BPAL does it pretty well.

Date: 2024-07-21 12:40 pm (UTC)I have finished testing my samples now and the winners for now are Twilight (lavender, jasmine, honeysuckle), Katharina (white musk, orange blossom, apricot) and Athens (amber and myrrh). This isn't so far off from what I expected, but the white musk working better for me than the others felt like a big discovery - the Katharina felt so sensual and lovely without being overwhelming. Athens too felt very clean and pure to me, and I think I will seek out more amber scents.
I liked the carnation in Morroco a lot! But in combination with the other notes I think that one, with Bastet, is going to be a special occasion and not a daily wear. White Rabbit really interested me and I want to test it again because it was surprising and complex; I also enjoyed Alice though my partner didn't like it on me. After another test, I don't think Blood Kiss is for me, alas.

Date: 2024-08-10 08:52 am (UTC)I was wondering if you'd be interested in receiving my BPAL discards? I haven't bought anything new in a few years (five, more?) so my collection is pretty out of date, but that also means I haven't done anything to offload my discards in a long time, and they should have a good home to go to!
I'd be happy to shop my collection for you and make some best guesses at your taste, or to just send you the lot, which might be easier on my end. Our tastes are pretty different, so there's probably a ton of musky/spicy/heavy things in there that won't work for me, but plenty of the discards ended up in there because they were floral gifts with purchase & not for me. I did a very cursory glance; I think there's ~75 imps and maybe one or two bottles, 99% BPAL, mix of general catalog and limited edition, and the LEs are mostly Yules & Halloweenies.
Some disclaimers: No worry if you're not interested! Seriously. I'm certain many of them won't work out. I'll try to be smart in packing, but don't have fancy materials so something could leak in shipping. Lots of these are gifts with purchase or were passed on by friends, so "do you want 75 imps??" is actually not as big and fancy as it sounds, haha.
I can be contacted on DW messages or at juushika AT gmail DOT com, if you're interested! It would be my pleasure.
