threesentenceficathon Fills Masterpost
Feb. 24th, 2024 02:48 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
In January/February I fell down the rabbit hole of the
threesentenceficathon & wrote fic for maybe the first time in ... fifteen years? I've written non-fic intermittently since then and of course have spent the last year writing hella original fiction (in the sense, that is, of hella-amounts, not hella-original), so those muscles were primed; turning that energy into fanfic was still strange! The three sentence format is a fun playspace: obviously a constrained format, which means limited time investment/barrier of entry; but three sentences almost means jam-packing those sentences, torturing punctuation, experimenting with format, and expanding/contracting the work to a) maintain the limitations but b) still go somewhere/do something/say something.
In total, I wrote about 13k words.
I crossposted my favorite pieces to Archive of Our Own, which is the first work I've ever posted there because I never did get around to crossposting my old FF.N works; maybe one day. Winnowing down my favorites gave me a chance to look at what worked best for me in my writing:
1) As I already knew, my interest in transformative works is almost exclusively limited to OT3s. This is stuff I read; turns out it's also something I want to write. Writing Willow/Tara/Oz and Steve/Jonathan/Nancy was effortless and rewarding; I would have written for other poly dynamics, but a) once I got in a groove my brain was primed to continue that groove, especially Buffy, I have infinite things to say about Buffy OT3, and b) others are more challenging? ex. I know Hemlock Grove novel/s1 back to front, but don't have the same encyclopedic memory of s2(/3), and a lot of OT3 writing is for me effectively fix-it fic, looking at paths canon could have taken/could take to Do Better by the relationship; I'm not interested in writing Roman/Peter/Miranda missing scenes but more "how to undo how they did Miranda dirty," which is a research project, not a three-sentence fic.
1b) But "OT3 is really all I read" is also why I bothered to crosspost things, because - I will read all the Willow/Tara/Oz, I really will; some other niche fanatic is probably in my same position, grasping at straws.
2) A lot of the media that means most to me in the world strains or rebuffs attempts at fanfiction. Corpse Party, Fate/Zero, and Goth all saw this: I love these titles, but I don't read fic for them, I just reread/play/etc them. Ditto, I wrote about two unfinished fic for each I posted. Sometimes the things I love best already answer their own questions, ex. Corpse Party has Book of Shadows which is effectively already canonical missing scenes/alternate scenes/fanfic; Fate/Zero, especially in the light novels, already makes interconnections between characters, fills in motivations, etc., in exhausting, brilliant detail. I care about these stories, I will not shut up about these stories, but sort of everything in them has already been said, which sounds limiting but is actually a marker of a type of story I really like. So then:
3) What is a fandom, exactly? I feel like I haven't had the answer to this since I stopped writing fanfic. Is it a title one returns to often? that one has things to say about? that one has transformative things to say about? A lot of the fandom traffic I see in my social group is for ongoing media, and I get the why of that (ongoing conversation with source and a community built around shared enthusiasm for more source), but I literally will never consume anything not 100% complete, and probably five+ years old, sorry, so that alienates rather than attracts me. But plenty of people were posting for random ass things that came out twenty years ago (positive), so fandom is often [certain traits] but is hardly ever only [one specific thing], which is fair.
4) Many of my favorite things to write were "inconsequential detail that stuck in my head a million years ago and still lives there rent free": What ever happened to Miss Kitty Fantastico, non-dead answers only? Why is Mass Effect sex so whatever about literal actual alien biology? That one scene from DAII that made me write a whole guilty essay about Fenris. &c. That, and OT3s, are the actual unanswered questions that media poses me.
5) Relatedly, if I wrote an essay at some point about why $media made me lose my mind, even if it was ages ago, I can get right back into that headspace. This is obvious; still, it's a note to self that writing more than book reviews might be good, actually.
6) I should probably sign up for Yuletide? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
7) Some of these prompts made me listen to Taylor Swift and, y'all, I just do not get it.
Anyway, a complete list of fills follows, with links for those crossposted to AO3, with limited annotations. (Is there a certain hiding-ness that happens in posting links rather than full texts? Sure; but also putting work on The Internet feels weird enough without crossposting every bit to every possible place.)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Willow/Tara/Oz
Best works collected here, which can coexist in a shared universe where "New Moon Rising" plays out a little differently, Oz stays, Tara and Oz bond, and then everyone gets involved in a sweet BDSM dynamic I guess? Below the cut, the order these fills were written, which is almost inverse of "chronological" order and indicative of why the pieces came together the way they did: "yeah," I said, "that could be Willow/Tara/Oz, sure" and then I accidentally gave myself a headcanon. I could almost see turning these into a longform narrative? Except I don't want to butt up against "Seeing Red" - some level of fix-it is beyond my ability to give a shit.
Original fills:
Any, any, collar kink as a gesture of acceptance of someone into another's home and life.
any, werewolf/human, pet play
any, any, compersion
Any, any, I've tested the lavender snow in a dozen ways, and it appears to have no ill effects - it really is just... lavender snow
any, any, that's a male calico (or male tortoiseshell) cat
Any, Any, soulmates AU (not on AO3)
Any, Any, "if I'm found, I'll end up lost."
Any, any female character, In a dream I was a werewolf (two fills)
Wishverse Willow/Tara
of flesh and blood give it up go
The complete work. This is easily my favorite thing I produced during the ficathon, less maybe for the individual prompts/fills but because the premise - vamp!Willow using Tara as a bloodbank for a few days and then deciding to keep her - is catnip to my id. I'd love to expand on this. Below, fills in the order they were written: ending, beginning, and then filling in interstitial content as the premise bounced around my head.
Original fills:
any, any, bloody fluff
any, any, caged
any, any, choosing the inevitable
Any, Any, villain character tenderly caring for a hero's wounds--wounds that they caused
Any, Any, Someone's worst enemy brushing their hair back as they promise to take care better care of them
any, any, "I'm falling, down into my shadow / concealing every breath"
Misc (the Kitty Fantastico corner)
any, any, library cat

any, any, saying ridiculous things to a cat
on AO3 as
I Keep Thinking That's the Cutest Thing Ever
Baby-talking a cat comes easy - especially when the cat is Tara.
any, any, head trauma
Stranger Things
Steve/Jonathan/Nancy collection; largely unconnected pieces, mostly written because this is one of my only OT3s where other people still care so there were prompts. I played in this sandbox mostly to explore what-ifs, especially with S5 content, as the characters get older but still carry their baggage. My favorite of these was the sad one, obvs.
Original fills:
Stranger Things, Steve Harrington/Nancy Wheeler, cheating on Jonathan (two fills)
Stranger Things, Steve Harrington/Nancy Wheeler, But with three of us, honey, it's a sideshow / And a circus ain't a love story, and now we're both sorry (we're both sorry).

Stranger Things, Stoncy, Any of the three of them brought into a poly relationship but feels like a third wheel and not an equal partner
Stranger Things, Stoncy, a dream within a dream
Cyberpunk 2077
A handful of back and forths with
vialethe produced fic I never thought I'd write (I watched my partner play 2077 rather than playing it myself, which I think gave me some degree of distance even though the central dynamic is 200% my trash) but really enjoyed.

on AO3 as
Smoke
V taps the pack in her palm one, two, three, then looks down at the gesture, the muscle memory which isn't hers but his.
